The First Essential Key to a Joyful Retirement: PLAN to Soul Search

In my last blog, I focused on the notion of “planning to plan” as a must-have ingredient in the “secret sauce” of the three essential keys to a joyful retirement. I also presented the idea that a well-planned retirement isn’t just about outliving money/resources, it’s about living well and mentally preparing to focus on YOU as a WHOLE person. Which leads me now to delving into the first essential key: PLAN to soul search.

When we retire, we often lose our sense of identity, but this doesn’t have to be the case. As Nell Smith explains in her book, Retire to the Life You Love, gaining clarity about oneself and what’s important helps guide choices in how to fulfill needs and find enrichment in life…and isn’t that what we want for ourselves in any phase of our lives?

Ask yourself: What brings me joy and satisfaction? How can I contribute to my community and family? What are some goals that I have always wanted to pursue?

Shake it up! Ditch that same old, same old thinking and do some soul searching. Monitor your curiosity, try something new, learn to meditate, complete a vision board, get creative by interrupting your usual routine, and challenge your automatic thinking.

Nowadays, many of us are also choosing to continue working in some capacity. This could be your opportunity to pursue your “heart’s desire” career! If you can’t remember what that was, ask yourself the question: “What did you want to be when you were a kid?” It’s a great place to start digging for the authentic answer and, surprisingly enough, it comes to most people almost immediately!

If the prospect of soul searching seems a little daunting, there are many assessment tools you can take to help you get to the root of who you are. Personality Dimensions® and Retirement Dimensions™ are an excellent starting point, and I can help guide you through them. Check out my Retire to the Life You Design workshop, which can also be delivered in a one-on-one format.

Watch for my November blog, which will explore the second essential key to a joyful retirement: PLAN to understand change and transition.
